One

Today our sweet girl turned one year old.

She was sick.  She had a fever.  And we had to cancel her party.  She spent most of the day in my arms, interspersed with bits of playing.  Grandma and Grandpa came over for a low-key celebration and to help eat the party food that won't stay good until next weekend.  We ate cake and toasted with nice champagne and opened a few gifts.  She smiled as much as she could, blew lots of kisses, and snuggled everyone.

It wasn't how I pictured it would be, but it was all that was needed, and left ample time for reflection upon the past year.  And though it was an unexpectedly difficult and emotional day for me, I am thankful that it ended up being a quiet one.

Celebrations will come later when our little love is herself again, and it won't matter a bit that they weren't exactly as planned.

Happy Birthday to the light of our lives.
